Well, hello entre-dentists. Angus Pryor here, creator of the Dental Profit System, co-author of the Amazon-crushing book, The Better Business Book, bringing you a special Marketing Monday.

Now, back when I was a young man, there was a TV show in Australia called Countdown. And for the next 10 weeks. I’m gonna do a countdown for the top 10 marketing mistakes that dentists make in Australia.

All right, top ten marketing mistakes. What is the tenth most common, or worst marketing mistake that I see from dentists? Do it yourself marketing. Now, let me say at the outset, some of you are going to hear this and go, “Well, that’s an extremely self-serving you know, comment from you Angus, given that you’re a marketer.” But just bear with me for a second.

The fact is as a marketer, some of the worst marketing that I’ve ever seen dentists done has been by themselves. Now, I need to tell you a little story about my business. When I first started, you know what it’s like. You’re bootstrapping your way through things.

I was doing the design myself. I was doing the ad works, the websites, the whole lot and fortunately, I had a coach. He said to me, “Angus, your designs are horrible.” And I’d have to say to you, the worst marketing stuff that I’ve seen done, overwhelmingly is where dentists … And let’s face it, most of you are not trying to be marketers. Where you try to do stuff yourself. So, do yourself a favor. Don’t be doing the DIY marketing.

Now, some of the ugliest websites I’ve ever seen have been DIY. But there is some other stuff as well. Some curious things that I’ve seen. One of them was a dentist in a particular practice where they, in that area there was a very, very strong ethnic group, which is totally fine. We have that in big cities all over Australia. But all of their marketing imagery was of white-faced people. It was like, “Here’s our client base.” But all of their imagery someone who’s not them. So that’s some of the other things that can happen.

Then the third one is around strategy. That’s the mistake I see when people are doing it themselves, is they tend to end up with a kind of, an approach that’s sort of all over the place. There’s not that sense of a coordinated approach and it makes you much more susceptible to someone coming along, visiting, reading you and saying, “Hey, we’ve got this awesome marketing thing and you should do it.” Well, if you’re in the DIY mode, you’re much more at risk of having that happen.

So, number ten, top ten mistake I see by marketers is DIY, do it yourself marketing. You know, you don’t want to be representing your business in terms of something that’s looking amateurish really. Is that really how you want to present your business? So, get some professionals involved.

That’s number ten. Otherwise, for me, we’ll see you next week when we countdown from ten down to number nine for the worst marketing mistakes. Otherwise, from Angus Pryor, signing off. See you next time.
