How To Start 2019 With A Bang Part 6

This is the the last step in this series, how to start 2019 with a bang. Well, I can give you a really simple answer to that one. Get help! Now, that might sound like stating the bleeding obvious but the fact is what often happens is we sort of muddle along by ourselves hoping that we’re going to really change things and the reality is, it just doesn’t happen.

As the saying goes, if you always did what you always do, you’re always going to get what you always got. So, we’re looking for a different outcome and that means you need to get help. Just so you know, I’ve taken my own medicine.

I’ve hired a coach this year, because I want to start my year with a bang, too. A different perspective.

Now, first point here to remember is to play to your strengths. If you’re really going to take your business to the next level this year then what you really need to be doing is figuring out what are you great at. And, I’ve got two criteria:

  • What do you love doing
  • What do you earn best for?

I mean, for a lot of dentists if you’re doing your highest level work you could be getting paid 500 or 1000 dollars an hour. Do you really want to be spending your time doing 20 dollars an hour jobs? Or 50 dollars an hour jobs? I wouldn’t have thought so.

So, you’re going to play to your strengths and you’re going to delegate your weaknesses. Part of the process for you and your business is looking at what are the things that really are your strengths.

Not even things that you’re good at or okay at but what are you great at and you like doing. ‘Cause usually they go together and then delegate your weaknesses.

Now on the weekend, on Saturday I spent a whole day with a group of, I have to say fairly elite dentists from all over Australia and one of the things that I noticed about these guys is they’d taken this really to the next level.

I mean, these are people with multimillion dollar businesses. Do you think they’re able to achieve a multimillion dollar business if they’re spending hours and hours figuring out Google Adwords or Facebook algorithm?

Absolutely not.

They get people who really excel in this space because if you can get help, if you can get an expert to be working for you this is what you end up with. Better and faster results. I know it doesn’t hurt to know how to do things but Malcolm Gladwell talks about facts from mastery to around 10,000 hours.

Now you can tinker under the bonnet with Adwords or Facebook or whatever other bits of marketing but you’re just never going to get to that point.

I’m never going to get that point in a whole range of different areas. Certainly not in dentistry. I’ve learned a thing or two working in the industry for a number of years but I’m not going to get to a point where I start examining teeth or extracting.

I mean, basically these days Google, Facebook, a few other bits and pieces, this is like diploma level skills. Maybe even degree level skills. It’s just not, you know. If you really want to start this year with a bang then I’m just going to say to you.

Play to your strengths and delegate your weaknesses.

Otherwise frankly, you’re getting in your own way. You’re being a bottleneck in your own business. When you should be doing thousand dollar an hour stuff rather than tinkering with stuff which is 20 or 50 dollars an hour.

Alright, so what I’d like to do then. Just one other thought, I mentioned about us working with mastermind, if you think about this. The other thing is sometimes we think, “I’m a rock, I’m an island, you know, I can do it by myself.”

Have you ever seen any elite sports people? Do you notice they’ve all got coaches or mentors, at least? That’s because we don’t see ourselves as others see us and so that outside input and that outside saying here is the next step to get you where you want to go to really quickly.
